Selections of Alba wines

After having carried out all the preparatory steps involved in setting up the Enoteca, in order to enhance the prestige of Alba wines the Order of Knights decided to create a selection each year of the very finest by carrying out a strict, blind tasting and including only the wines which achieved the highest standards with a score of at least 90/100 in a Selection of the Great Wines of Alba.

The first Selection took place in 1975. Samples from productions of at least 1000 bottles of Wine Trail member wineries were tasted by a special panel appointed from among the Order’s Master Tasters, and only one wine - a 1970 Barbaresco produced by Francesco Rinaldi from Alba -  passed the Selection’s 90/100 score criterion in that year, and was therefore awarded the right to be sold in the Grinzane Cavour Enoteca - and directly by the producer - bearing a special, prestigous label (the Order was the first body in Italy to be officially recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture under EC Regulation 2133/74).

The following year, six producers were awarded a total of 12 labels, while 1981 proved to be an exceptional year: no fewer than 22 of the 41 wines submitted passed the test of the Selection, attaining the standard of excellence.

From 2015 all the wineries, members of the Grinzane Cavour Enoteca can participate to the Wine Selection of the Order of the Knights of the Truffle and the Wines of Alba.

Each winery can present two wines of its own production that are tasted by a rigorous Tasting Commission (chaired from 2017 by Alessandro Masnaghetti), if they pass the selection they receive the institutional label of the Order of the Knights of the Truffle and Wines of Alba and are numbered from 1 to 100.
In this way they become unique pieces and can be purchased only at the Piedmontese “Cavour” Regional Enoteca or the e-commerce site:

Held in September, the Chapter dedicated to the Selection represents a very important time, not only for wine producers who chose to participate and therefore accept the final judgement of the jury but also for the entire winegrowing sector of the Langhe and the Roero.
