Oreste Mattirolo, President of the Academy of Agriculture and Director of the Botanical Institute at Turin University, wrote these botanical notes in the midst of the financial crisis following the first world war. The stated aim was to teach people how very many of the herbs and grasses found in meadows and fields are edible, and can therefore prove to be a useful part of a diet, especially in times of a food shortage.
