MONOGRAPH ON VINEGROWING AND WINEMAKING IN THE PROVINCE OF CUNEO
Lorenzo Fantini – anastatic ed. 1973 text 1879 – Out of print
It is thought that Lorenzo Fantini, a surveyor from Monforte, wrote this Monograph in 1895 for the Cuneo Provincial Exhibition. Written in fine calligraphy, the work is of exceptional interest: for its thoroughness, the plates presenting the various systems of cultivation, the sub-division of the areas of origin of the wines, the wise and cutting comments, and the guidelines on how to improve quality and conquer new markets. Worthy of note is the list of wineries at the time, described with the passion of a reporter, and the account of the wines and growing areas (with mentions of the “crus” – his word) is superb. The original copy of the last draft was found in the Archives of the Cuneo Board of Agriculture by Roberto Macaluso, and the Knights have had an anastatic copy printed.
